* I’m going to assume that if you’re interested in this review, then you have already played everquest at least enough to have a basic understanding of the game*

ok, wow, nice facelift verant!

With the release of this new addition to the popular on-line role playing game Everquest, comes a nice new 3d engine and new graphics for all the character models. The price for this upgrade is that you may need to update your system just a bit. To have all the new models turned on requires a minimum 512 mb memory. Not too big of a deal since memory is pretty cheap.

In order to get to Luclin, which is actually norrath’s moon, you have to get to the wizard spires first and /hail the nexus scion, and then say “I wish to journey to

Luclin.” You can add whatever you wish to this statement, but “journey to Luclin” must be in that statement. example: “let me journey to Luclin or I’ll smack you upside the head biatch!”

Anyway, so once you get up to Luclin you are now in the Nexus. The Nexus is a nice introduction to norraths moon. There are many non-player characters (npc’s) that when /hail ‘d will respond to you and tell you a bit about Luclin such as where you are and where the 4 different paths that lead out of the Nexus will take you. The closest town, shadowhaven and the bazaar, are actually right next door.

The bazaar is where you will find more of a stripped down town, but noteably where you can purchase horses. Horses are not for the young adventurer as it takes a large sum of platinum to purchase. The more expensive the horse the faster it will go. Unfortunately you can only use your horse in an outside zone.

Along with the addition of horses you also have a whole new race, the vah shir. This is a catlike humanoid that is native to the moon. Vah shir can be many different classes such as bards, warriors, rogues, and shaman. What the vah shir race brings to the table that is different is the beastlord class. The beastlord class is a hybrid between a monk, warrior, and a shaman. Now that the vah shir race has been discovered all large races are now able to be beastlords as well. I’m not going to get into the new class too much as I have only leveled one to 15 before getting bored, so I don’t know them well enough to go much further in my description.

The new zones in Luclin are definitely different from what you’ve seen in the past expansions. There are new monsters, vegetation, trees, npc interactive quests, and new ring wars that will really test your skills. The new, so called, ‘uba’ mob’s in luclin are definitely challenging fights. Most of these monsters have an enormous amount of hit points and armor class. Some of these encounters will take a full guild force to take these down, but don’t let this scare off the younger adventurer as Luclin also has a lot of content and quests for you as well.

This expansion also gives players that are over level 50 the ability to acquire new skills via the new alternate experience option. Here you can strengthen your character as you gain points through gathering experience the same way you did before, but now you can split your experience in 1/10 increments between regular leveling experience and alternate skills experience. Each class has a ton of new skills that they can choose using this new option, but it definitely takes time to gain these new skills(unless you are a hybrid ;)). Along with gaining new skills you also gain new titles that appear next to your name. The more skill points you have, the cooler your name.

As a whole the new expansion breaths a breath of fresh air into the now outdated graphics, brings a ton of new zones from newbie zone to level 60 zones, brings a lot of new monsters, introduces alternate experience, and also brings a new race and class. It’s a nice expansion but it’s like putting a spit shine on a sneaker, or putting make-up and a long blond haired wig on rosie o’donnell. It’s still an old, smelly, ugly, big headed lesbian. Err that didn’t make any sense. Anyway Shadow of Luclin is a good expansion and offers everyone a lot of new things to do, and some nice eye candy.
