To begin with, expansion packs are only issued for successful/popular games. Recent examples of this include the Diablo II and Baldur’s Gate II expansion pack. Not so surprising, there is no expansion pack in the works for Daikatana. So the question is: does the expansion pack significantly enhance gameplay with new interesting/fun features? Or, is the expansion pack just a continuation of the original game with nothing new to offer, thrown out by the manufacturer as a stopgap measure until the full fledged sequel can hit the stores? Put more bluntly: is the expansion pack worth the money?

In the case of the “Links 2001 expansion pack”, the answer is an unqualified yes. Computer golf games by definition are dependent on the courses provided, as gameplay (the “tri

click” swing) has remained unchanged in the links series of games since the days of the 486 processor. What has changed about golf games? The graphics and realism of the golf courses.

Simply put, the additional fours courses provided in the expansion pack (Bighorn, Thanksgiving Point, Banff Springs, and Pelican Hill) are equal to, if not better than the courses provided in the original game. Terrain varies from the canyons and coasts of California, to the desert of Utah to the wilderness of Canada.

I am obligated to mention that the Links Expansion Pack also provides 2 new course design kits to help [ha!] you create your own courses with the Arnold Palmer Course Designer (APCD) which includes hundreds of additional golf course objects, trees shrubs, etc. again, I recommend the APCD only to those with a degree in computer science and a high degree of tolerance for intense frustration.

For longtime fans of the Links games, the expansion pack contains the Links 2001 Course Converter, which can convert up to 36 Links LS courses for play with Links 2001.

The bottom line is that buying the expansion pack allows the choice of playing 9 great golf courses as compared to 5 great golf courses provided in the original game.
