Mech Commander 2 took an
interesting twist on the battletech universe by combining real time strategy
with role playing producing a truly amazing gameplay. I was a bit worried
when the cutscene and story didn't live up to my expectation, and I especially
didn't like the fact that I was a mercenary. The guns for hire theme of
privateer and others never appeal to me.
But once the game loads , I was utterly surprised by the fast paced action
(for an RTS game), thundering sound, incredible terrain, and imaginative and
captivating battletech universe. Resource management is kept to a bare minimum of
salvaging scraps and rewards for meeting objectives. True to the battletech theme,
the game is about acquiring new technology, designing and customizing your mech,
training your pilots, and to |

a lesser extent managing heat. But on the battlefield,
it's all about your tactic and strategy and the skills of your pilot. The role
playing component comes in how you can improve the skill of your pilots and how
they learn new skills from mission to mission. To perfect my pilot's fighting
skills, I use the same pilots for most missions and I train them on key skills that
I value such as the use of long range missiles or laser technology. Since all of
my top pilots are well adept at long range skill, I design and equip my mechs with
long range weaponry. And in my attack, I use speed and range to my advantage.
I was dissapointed with the linear campaign and simple objectives however, and how
little of the battletech universe it unveils which harms the replay value of the
game dramatically. Replayability is pretty much in trying different mech, different
mech design, and different strategy to complete a mission. There's a large variety of
weaponry for you to play with such as laser, pulse laser, ppc, gauss rifle, machine gun,
autocannon, long range missile, short range missile. Each weapon has unique range,
damage, rate of fire and heat requirements. There's also a large variety of mechs and
you get more advance mech as the mission progresses. The best part of the game is
definitely the 3-d environment setting the stage for an amazing 3-d battle. Take
advantage of this by keeping your mech constantly on the maneuver to dodge incoming
enemy fire especially long range missile and use hills to your advantage to pick off
enemy units and unleashing your payload on the enemy. Protect your support units like
your repair truck and keep them in a safe place, since they are the key to success in
many tough campaign missions. And the campaign in mechcommander 2 gets pretty tough
later on.
In conclusion, I would recommend this game to all of the battletech fans out there.
And for all of you hard core RTS, role playing fans, I think you will be pleasantly
surprised by this concept game. I would give this game a 4 planet rating for its
creativity and deduct one planet for a few shortcomings.
