Playing “Resident Evil 3: Nemesis” on a PC is like taking
your sister to the prom. Sure, you can do it, but it’s just not quite right.
I confess I was/am a huge fan of the “Resident Evil” series on the Playstation, so playing this game
on a PC seemed blasphemous. What I found was a faithful adaptation of the Playstation version. Not
better, not worse. The puzzles were all the same, the weapons were in the same place, and the cut
scenes were the same. One PC “bonus” was the option of six different outfits available for the female
character at the start of the game, but my two choices left Jill Valentine looking like Katie Couric
with a shotgun. In the Playstation version, you had to win the game, re-start and find a key to the
boutique that was always locked the first time through to get the different outfits.
Game play was difficult at first with puzzling default settings on the keyboard, but after a quick
re-configure, this was not a problem. The biggest drawback of the PC version is lack of the vibration
controller. This cannot be underestimated. Shooting a zombie in the face with a shotgun and having
the controller pulsate with every shot fired was a highlight of the Playstation game, and sorely
lacking on the PC.
The bottom line is that if for some reason you have a $1,200.00 computer and do not have a $99.00
Playstation, then by all means get this game. The PC version still retains enough of the macabre “Night
of the Living Dead” atmosphere to warrant play. However, if you have already played the Playstation
version, the PC edition adds nothing new to the game.
