Spider-man Spider-man.
does whatever a spider can.
spins a web any size.
catches thieves just like flies.
look out! here comes the spider-man.

It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when we know the words to the spider-man cartoon theme song, but not to the national anthem. But, ask just about anyone (well… any guy) who grew up in the 70’s or 80’s and they’re sure to be able rattle it off. It just proves how important our comic book heroes (and now our real nyc heroes) are to us. Spider-man is right up there with Batman and Superman in the superhero department and ironically he’s based in NYC. Maybe Spidey should think about kicking some terrorist ass!

Spider-man the game was first released for the Dreamcast and the Playstation. Needless to say PC gamers were excited when it finally made it to the PC. Most hardcore gamers are skeptical of console ports and unfortunately they’re justified in this case. Although Spider-man’s graphics have been pumped up to high-resolution PC standards, all of the pitfalls of console games remain. The cut scene videos are choppy, there’s no in game save feature and the controls are awkward. This doesn’t mean it’s a total flop. Spidey’s comic book personality and acrobatic moves are the only saving graces of the game.

There’s a definite thrill swinging from skyscraper to skyscraper across the nyc skyline. The combat can be a rush as well and is similar, in some respects, to the martial arts fighting in Oni. Your arsenal includes an exploding web shield, web spiked guantlets, web projectiles and of course… your bare fists. You’ll need all of them to combat just about every super villain spider-man has ever faced. The fights with venom are some of the highlights of the game.

Spider-man’s creator, Stan Lee, does voice over work for all of the cut scenes, advancing the storyline. This adds a great deal of legitimacy to the game and quite frankly makes it a must for any Spider-man fan. In spite of its console game faults, Spider-man is most likely a game you’ll play all the way through just to hear more of Stan Lee and see which classic Spider-man Arch Nemesis you’ll face next. Once it’s all over you’ll walk away humming Spider-man, Spider-man does whatever a spider can…
