He’s back baby, yeah!
Austin Powers:
International Man
Of Mystery
returns for his third jaunt at the cinema.
This wildly popular franchise featuring the
British spy with bad teeth certainly
has a bigger bark than its bite. Supposedly
thought of as the years Summer
blockbuster; The hour and a half
Goldmember certainly has its flaws.
However it most certainly has its
bits of boisterously entertaining humor.
After the success of
Austin Powers
1 and 2, Goldmember had a lot going
for it. Mike Myers
has built up a massive fan base with the first two films and
ticket holders were anxious to see the third installment.
I think, like most previews, they
make the movie more than it is. I
was eager to see this new episode like many others, as
I enjoyed the previous two.
Boy was I
in for a surprise! I knew that
Myers would have something
entertaining for me to watch but nothing like this.
Goldmember is simply put; 90 minutes
of dick and fart gags.
Granted some of the jokes were funny,
but how many penis jokes can you fit into an hour and a half?
This film definitely had way too
many. Now not to say that
I don’t enjoy a raunchy joke now and
again but this film has several of them in the wrong places.
At first they were funny but they
soon wore thinner than a crowd at a Vanilla
Ice concert. It
seemed that Mike
Myers was out to throw together a string of jokes about
a dick and some fart noises and slap it on some film.
Goldmember does have its funny
moments. The scene with the
subtitles was quite funny as well as the fight scene between
Mini-Me
and Austin. It’s
always funny to see midgets run around and get into mischief.
The film has a star-studded cameo
cast (Ozzy, Britney
Spears, and Tom
Cruise to name a few) and not to
mention the oh so attractive lead singer from
Destiny’s Child,
Beyonce Knowles.
Many of the jokes were recycled from
the previous movies and are starting to get old.
But, with the shocker ending
Austin Powers
may yet have another chance to redeem himself in yes a . . .
sequel?!?! So if you’re an
Austin Powers
fan like I am/was (not sure what
I am right now) head on over to your
local cinema to check it out. Nevertheless,
make sure it’s a matinee show, you won’t have to spend as much
money. You can save it for the
summer’s creep show Signs with
Mel Gibson.
I give Goldmember
3 Planets. It’s
generally funny with signs of its age, but still it has a
fresh feel to it and could potentially be active enough for
another sequel or two. I leave out
the last 2 Planets because of the
continuous lack-luster bathroom humor.
Jameson Rating:
3 out of 5 Planets
