Clint Eastwood has been in many movies. From all the Dirty
Harry movies to Space Cowboys, and his own directed films,
Eastwood has come a long way. Some say his days are over and
some say that he is like wine, it gets better with age. With
his latest release Blood Work, Clint does not dissatisfy. With
an honorable script this late in the summer movie lineup,
Blood Work also boasts a good mystery and an attractive
co-star for this senior actor.
Clint Eastwood is Terry McCaleb, a FBI field agent who retires
from the force due to a bad heart. On the trail of the “Code
Killer” Eastwood drops his career in order to save his life,
thus letting the murderer escape. After two years the trail
picks up in the most peculiar way. Through strange
circumstances involving blood samples and a pre-owned heart,
McCaleb is drawn back into his former career by the wishes of
Graciela Rivers (Wanda de Jesus). In true film noir theme
Eastwood ends up bedding this woman, which made the whole
movie theatre cringe at the thought of a 72-year old man
laying pipe with someone that could be his granddaughter.
The movie seemed easily predictable as to where it was going
but entertaining nonetheless. As long as you can pay attention
to seemingly important scenes, mapping out this flick is a
piece of cake. The plot felt stretched as far as
believability, but hey it is the cinema right? Film Noir is
naturally exaggerated and Clint Eastwood shines bright.
Reminiscing the days of Dirty Harry in a wild gunfight in the
middle of the day Blood Work maintains a gritty edge to a
resigned FBI agent.
Also acting in this film is Jeff Daniels, made famous from his
film Dumb & Dumber featuring Jim Carrey. Daniels plays Buddy
Noone, McCalebs beach-bum boathouse living neighbor. With the
trademark mellow attitude Daniels brings to all his roles
(deliberately or not) Noone gets to Eastwoods soft side and
ends up his semi-side kick in the bizarre case. At the end of
the film the killers’ motives should leave you wondering why
some people are so twisted. Clues through the movie should
give you an idea of who the culprit is and if not, it quickly
becomes clear.
I give the film 3 Planets. Clint Eastwood still has that gruff
“I can still kick your ass even though I’m really old”
attitude. His persona commands so much stage presence you can't
help but like his roles. Even if the
movie is less than stellar Eastwood can give it his all and
come out swinging. I also enjoyed the smooth delivery of the
film. It made it so much easier to watch (not that it wasn’t
in the first place) Nevertheless, the summer blockbusters are
all over and I am patiently waiting for those highly
anticipated fall releases. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie but
it lacked that certain panache and advertisement. I don’t
picture it winning any awards but rather becoming a sleeper
hit. Blood Work is one of those movies that you buy because
you liked it but it’s not your favorite. A well-fabricated
plot with fleshed out characters closes the 2002 summer movie
procession.
