“One day, men will look back and say
I gave birth to the
Twentieth Century.”
If you know anything about
Jack The
Ripper, that quote should
automatically give you the creeps. From
Hell, the 2001 movie based on
The Ripper
murders star Johnny
Depp and Heather
Graham; two relatively established
entertainers. This smart new twist
to an age-old mystery gives thriller fans a run for their
money. Note that this film strains
the “R” rating it received with use
of drugs, sex, language, and pervasive violence.
So if you are to see it, make sure
you put the kids to bed early or that your parents are gone
for the day.
The baffling part about
The Ripper
case is that it stopped as abruptly as it started, leaving
behind no clues, no substantial evidence, and no concrete
suspects. Ladies and gentlemen this
was a real murder investigation during 1888 in the
Whitechapel
District of London,
England; notorious for harboring
prostitutes and criminals. If one
studies the brutality of these murders one could understand
why he was called “Jack
The Ripper”.
Jack was known to eviscerate his
victims and take organs with him. On
one account he sent half a liver to the constable claiming he
ate the other half.
Enough with the gore and more about
the DVD. For
starters, the DVD interface is put
together well. It has good sound
effects and a nice array of extras; Two
discs in fact. The
Hughes brothers did a fantastic job
in the studio putting it all together. The
collectors’ edition comes with film commentaries, behind the
scene interviews, and real articles from the
Whitechapel murders.
Johnny Depp;
cult movie star returns to play a seedy, opium addicted
detective abberline, who happens to have precognitive visions.
This is his third
major occult movie, next to the ninth gate and sleepy hollow.
Johnny does an admirable job at all
his acting, but seems to excel at creepy movies.
The only complaint that
I have is the fact that he uses
drugs. I realize that it is merely
for the fact of character development but I
always feel annoyed when movies have heavy drug use.
Other than that fact
I thought the movie was great.
Heather Graham
plays a very unfamiliar role as a prostitute.
Her and her fellow harlots are the
rippers victims so I won’t give away
too much about her. The whole cast
of characters speaks in the ever so pleasing dialect of
cockney! Cockney my friend is the
British version of
American ebonics.
For example:
Normal: Hello
there, why you have some lovely pants!
Cockney: Oy!
You gots some bloomin chaps on ya
there!
Ebonics: Yo
biotch! You betta be bustin outta
those Levi’s befo i bust a in yo ass
foo!
You see? It’s
fun to learn new and exciting things to say.
Whether you’re in the bad part of
London or in “Da
Hood” you can admire someone’s
pants! Aside from the daily language
lesson, From Hell
is worth the money you spend to buy it or rent it.
However, make sure you aren’t faint
of heart when it comes to violence, sex, drug use, or
language. Otherwise, make
From Hell
your next movie purchase or rental.
