Overview
The first installment of this horror series was made in 1984
and was directed by horror king Wes
Craven. Nancy has been
having weird dreams lately. Dreams of a burnt man with knives
for fingers. He wears a red and green sweater with an old
style hat. What is strange about the dreams is that her
friends are having the same nightmares. As her friends start
to die, Nancy must fight to find out whom this man in her
dreams is while fighting to stay both awake and alive.
Nancy
soon finds out from her mother, a depressed alcoholic, who
Fred Krueger really is.
Fred Krueger was a mass murderer some years ago.
The police
eventually caught him and threw him in jail.
He was released
on a technicality, enraging the parents of
Elm Street.
The
parents banded together and paid Fred a visit at his little
shack. The parents surrounded the shack and set it on fire.
Tred was burned to death.
He should be dead.
Fred Krueger has come back to kill the children of
Elm Street
to pay back the parents that burned him. The police and
parents don’t believe the kids because he is killing them in
their dreams.
Review
This movie is one of the great horror movie classics.
Back
when it was Fred, not
Freddy. Back when it wasn’t a bunch of
one-liners before the kill. Back when it was scary and not a
comedy. Nightmare has the “grab onto someone” appeal that
makes it great for a 3rd date film. It has some over the top
killing scenes that are not appropriate for children or those
weak of stomach. Nightmare has a classic struggle of the evil
man versus the good girl theme. Nancy versus
Fred in a no
holds barred fight to the finish. Johnny
Depp debuts in this
movie and remembers his roots in Nightmare 6 where makes a
public service announcement that is very humorous.
If you buy
any of the Nightmare collection now it comes with the original
theatrical trailer and an interview with the director.
