That’s right folks, the long awaited feature film Spider-Man
is finally in theatres and sweeping the nation by storm! Considering how long
it has been in the works and all the set backs, moviegoers were getting antsy
for the next major production super hero film. Make no mistake about it,
Spider-Man will please both the young and young at heart with its cut and dry
good vs. evil duels and a little romance between peter parker and his
attractive neighbor Mary Jane Watson.Already breaking the first weekend box office records
drawing in over 100 million dollars in 3 days, Spider-Man is clearly well
received. It centers around high-school dork Peter Parker (played by Toby Maguire)
who is bitten by a genetically altered spider, sending his life in a spiral of
harrowing events with the traditional super villain the Green Goblin. Kirsten Dunst
plays the attractive yet also troubled Mary Jane Watson, Parker’s secret love. After
discovering his mystical powers he is driven to protect New
York from traditional thieves, rapists, and
murderers. After some well thought out scenes he finally faces the films
antagonist, the Green Goblin. William Dafoe does an excellent job at playing
the green goblin; making him appear to be a crazy old man living in the
basement. Spider-Man commences the summer movie season and the future looks
promising.
This movie generated so much publicity because the release
date had been pushed back multiple times. Originally slated for release more
then four years ago, the public was getting anxious. In addition Hollywood has
been devouring up as many comic book movies as it can get due to the success of
past hero movies. Spider-Man was intended to come out last fall but due to September
11th, scenes had to be cut and added as not in offense to anyone. These additions
are painfully evident in the numerous pro-American phrases and scenes.
Spider-man is an overall crowd-pleaser, but not without its
share of cheese. I need not explain any further than it is rooted in the action
genre. I actually enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. After a rash
of dangerous action movies, I found it to be very refreshing. Spider-Man
deserves 4 Planets; It is entertaining, humorous and downright fun. But see it
for yourself and form your own opinion.
Jameson Rating: 4 out of 5 Planets
