The overall plot of this movie is a high school senior is branded uncool in the ninth grade who decides to get himself expelled so that he can change his image to a cool kid at the town's other high school. Doesn't exactly sound like the movie you rant and rave to your friends about, but it certainly has its moments and had tremendous upside going into the movie theater.
If you don't expect too much out of this movie, then you surely won't be disappointed. You'll never hear me say that this is movie of the year material, because it isn't. It's along the same lines of the movie "Angus". It's one of those cute, stupidly funny movies that you either love or hate. I happened to really enjoy it, because the humor was constant, and it's always funny watching the geek try to be cool. The best parts of the movie tend to revolve around when the main character,
Dizzy Harrison, is in jail. Luther (played by funny guy Eddie
Griffin), the little scary guy in jail, befriends him and makes dizzy his project. He changes his name to Gil Harris and tells him that the only way to attain coolness is to get shipped out of his current school and start fresh with a new image at a new school. Dizzy decides to take his advice, and proceeds to attempt multiple times to get expelled to no avail. After a prank that goes too far, he gets the boot and thus a new chapter in his life begins.
It's the story of a boy that goes through a lot in a short period of time, showing a struggle that is all too familiar with kids nowadays: to fit in.
Going from the geek of the school to the new school's hero provides you with plenty of laughs to go around and quotes that you won't easily be able to forget. What is most interesting is watching him deal with his old friends and his new friends, as well as how he deals with conflict in his new school, especially the new high school bully. The head cheerleader of his new high school's team is played by former
Planet42 HYSG Eliza Dushku, who happens to be going out with the high school bully.
She pleads with Gil, who has very quickly become the cool kid at school, to use his new influence on the high school population to get a rousing crowd to show up to their next football game, which hasn't won a game in years. After gaining the support of the high school and showing up at the football game, they finally win, and Dushku has no one to thank but Gil. Things get very intriguing when Gil's old high school football team comes to play his new team.
There are tons of twists and turns in this movie, so if you like that kind of flick, this is the one for you ;-)
If you're one of those people that love cameos, pay attention, because this movie is chock full of them. The ones that I saw myself where Tony
Hawk, Vanilla Ice, Tommy Lee, Henry Rollins, and Gene Simmons, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are even more. There are hilarious outtakes during/after the credits, so sit tight, because it will be worth it.
I'll give this a strong 4, only because I knew what to expect. If you have high expectations of it, then you might give it a 3 or a 3.5. Overall, it's definitely a movie to rent, or see during a matinee. The matinee is always cheaper baby!!!
