They’re back again, those fiendish creatures of the night;
Coal Chamber. Their
new effort, Dark Days is the third installment in their assortment of metal. Not
quite death metal but harder than your average steel. This twisted quartet still
has poison left on their black blade of metal. Like the Phoenix arising from its
ashes, Coal Chamber recovers from Chamber Music and redeems themselves on this
album.
Dez (vocals) Meegs (guitar) Rayna (bass) and Mike (drums) have
produced a quality cd this time around Akin to their first lp. Chamber Music had
dulled Coal Chamber’s creepy music edge and they were criticized for selling
out. Gladly this recording digs them out of the grave. Full of Dez’s raspy
monster screams are sure to please. Coal Chamber claims to have created a
totally new genre of metal . . . Spooky Metal. When you listen to the cd you can
almost imagine a soundtrack to a black voodoo nightmare. As scary as i
make them sound Coal Chamber delivers excellent well-rounded recordings good to
rock to.
If you have heard the radio single “Fiend” you know what the cd
has to offer. Titles like “Friend?” and “One Step” seem normal enough but read
the lyrics:
Fiend "Living a lie, let’s not
pretend That you like me or we are friends We can call it for the
few That are listening tonight We’ll divide the dream, cut the
loss Feel no pain, you can fu*k the fame You can fu*k the fame For the
ones that are listening"
One Step "All my life it’s been
much the same game All together now who pass the blame game I’m not the one
so don’t put your shame on You’re not the one that i put the blame on"
Those who know about all the flack Coal Chamber got for Chamber
Music
could relate “Fiend” to their anger towards the fans that ditched them. “One
Step” might be about society blaming heavy music for insane people that kill
others. But hey, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, so decide for
yourself.
The liner notes have a running theme amongst them. It’s full of
Spanish text and Mexican figurines; go figure. If you like Coal
Chamber make
Dark Days your next cd selection, you won’t be disappointed. I give this record
4 Planets for good music, vocal quality, and catchy lyrics. It’s one of those cds that if you listen to it and you put it away for a few weeks you can't wait
to toss it back into your cd player. You can check out Coal Chamber’s web site by
