Dido Armstrong is back with her angelic, yet seductive voice. Her debut album ‘No Angel’ was a huge worldwide hit and this sophomore effort is, in many ways, just as powerful and should keep her atop the charts for more years to come. There certainly is no sophomore jinx here.

‘Life For Rent’ is an album that consists of twelve very emotional and intense tunes. While the album stands well as one whole unit, it also does exceptionally well in allowing each track to have its own identity and also stand on their own individually. The lyrics throughout this record are amazing, as they are deep, meaningful and full of imagery that allows the listener to really get inside of them and feel the compassion within. The first single ‘White Flag’ has already been a huge hit with its extremely addictive flavor, but keep listening and you’ll hear quite a few other standout tracks throughout. The title track is a delicate yet pleasantly smooth strummer. ‘Mary’s In India’ plays out as a story about this boy Danny whose lover leaves him, his struggles and his recovery from it. ‘Sand In My Shoes’ is fun, sharp and catchy and is about yearning for the good, relaxing vacation-style life again. ‘This Land Is Mine’ may be the best song on the disc with its contagious alterna-country vibe that really grooves. ‘See The Sun’ closes the set with compelling authority but be sure not to miss out on another treasure track which is hidden a few minutes after that last track ends. I’ll guess the name of it is ‘Closer You Get’ but regardless of its title, it would be a shame for anyone to miss one of the best off this album. Still others such as ‘Don’t Leave Home’, ‘Stoned’ and ‘See You When You’re 40’ are all also very effective in capturing insightful spirit.

I really can’t say enough about her voice though. I guess all I can tell you is if you didn’t fall under Dido’s magical spell with ‘No Angel’, then you will probably want to stay away from this one. But for the majority of pure music fans out there who can appreciate a sensational voice, ‘Life For Rent’ will bring much pleasure and many, many listens. These songs really grip you in a relentless nature and refuse to let go as they all contain attitude, heart and personality. Dido Armstrong is seriously playing on a higher level than most female artists these days with that heaven-sent, ethereal voice of hers. That voice brings a feeling of Home as it makes you feel so safe and secure as it winds its way through your mind. Get absorbed into this deep-rooted 4.5 Planet effort.
