A band known for its grueling live shows, Galactic treats us here with a live set played in their hometown of New Orleans. With accomplished drummer Stanton Moore and bassist Robert Mercurio laying down the funk-based groundwork from which this band rises from, they really build a nice foundation of multi-layered sounds crossing over different genres. In order to traverse those borders, the rest of this six-piece act all join in forming a very gifted wide-ranging sound. Ben Ellman is on Saxes and harmonica, Jeff Raines is on guitar, Rich Vogel works the keyboards and Theryl de’Clouet brings his soulful vocals to complete the mix.

If you are looking for that throwback sound of old school soul, look no further than ‘Villified’, ‘I Get Lifted’, and ‘My Mind is Hazy’ which finds lead singer Theryl doing his raspy voice thang. There is a sense of something new melding with that classic old. Fans of solos will find ‘Baker’s Dozen’ to their liking, being a fine jam composition weaving improv solos in and around each other including a big time drum solo by Moore. The opening jaunt, ‘Crazyhorse Mongoose’, also finds that sweet funk groove. For a spacey approach, ‘Moog Marmalade’ and ‘Two Clowns’ really adds the moody space-out jams into this musical blender. The former weaves a hypnotic groove that charms you, as a snake charmer would charm a snake out of its basket. The latter starts with a deep funk bass line before finding an ambient soundscape to work towards a big strong finish. Fans of just plain ole crazy sick jams will be delighted with the inclusion of ‘Shibuya’, which is a powerful canvas for music exploration interplay as no two versions ever play out exactly the same.

Basically this disc is just a pure, cool glimpse inside of a Galactic live show. This show represents a real nice set of offerings to chew on. Discover this new energy they are infusing into the traditional New Orleans Jazz style. Hop on board and join this 4 planet inter-galactic party.
