As Our
Lady Peace continues to expand their discography they continue to expand
their talents both instrumentally and lyrically. Their last album (Spiritual
Machines) was a mild success, but could have been labeled overlooked by many.
The band is back in 2002 with a new album called “Gravity”. The
Canadian
alternative group has thrown everything that they have into this release and
have produced a stellar album. I can only hope that the media pays more
attention to this release than the prior releases by this group. It is time that
OLP begins making waves in that billboard wave pool.
Although this album
is on the short side (10 tracks) it is a far cry from being considered a weak
release. The 10 tracks combine into a powerful display of modern music. This
album is worth your hard earned cash. In fact, I have viewed several online
stores who have reduced the prices (due to the ~ 42 minute recording time).
All for you sets the grungy mood for the entire album. The
exhausting guitars are quickly followed by the bands staple; the vocal style.
The vocal sound creates a style for this band that can be matched by no other
mainstream band. The song (as a whole) doesn’t score points in originality, but
does offer you a sound that is very impressive. These guys don’t really output a
sound that you haven’t heard before, but the sound that they output is as good
as anyone else (who uses the style). Do You Like it is the next track on the
album. This is truly a great song. The lyrics are thoughtful, well written, and
executed perfectly as they compliment a rhythm that is equally impressive.
In
my opinion this song should be the albums single, but what do i know? Somewhere
Out There (the actual album single) follows and manages to maintain the albums
excitement. The jam is toned down a bit progressing more slowly than the
previous 2 tracks. The lyrics are again well written and sung in a manner that
allows for your own interpretation. Innocent is the fourth track on “gravity”
and is one to be considered as an anthem (in a sense). The track is very
complete and expresses its message well via clear and concise lyrics. The next
track Made Of Steel is also very deep and well written. This band has evolved
since its origin by taking significant song writing steps from album to album.
While each of the previous albums contain a few hit songs, “Gravity” contains a
solid set list. Made Of Steel may be the track that stands out above the other
tracks. Sell My Soul starts with a gloomy beginning giving an almost sad feel
for the track. The drum beat slams out your speakers as a hypnotic trance before
the track gets fully underway. The track slides on maintaining that gloomy feel,
but never seems to advance past it. The vocals are crying out (sometimes using
an off key approach) a message, which can be easily understood by the listener.
The track is quite unusual in its approach, but OLP is talented enough to
contribute everything they have into making it a great song. Not Enough
continues the gloomy mood, which was created during the last tune. The song
lacks variation as it stays quite gloomy and the vocals are again crying out. It
sounds very similar (in style) to the previous song. Sorry is the next track and
a very good track at that. It starts you off quickly and adds instrumentation piece
by piece, a very nice touch. Once the track is fully underway the sound is
amazing. It is great song that holds many good things within. This track is not
one to be skipped when listening to this album. Bring Back The Sun is next up on
the set list. This may be the weakest track on the entire album. It is very slow
moving and the vocals sound a bit shaky. I am inclined to think that the vocal
style was recorded to paint the image, but it doesn’t make for a good song. I
give credit to the band for placing this on the album, but it misses the boat
for me, personally. While the song does have some negative comments associated with it does
glisten from time to time, but it takes a certain mood for one to enjoy it. A Story
About A Girl is the closing song on the album. This song is a
very good choice for a closer as it is upbeat and done to perfection.
It is not near as gloomy
as the rest of the songs, which may have been the purpose. In any event this
track is uplifting and worth your time to take a listen. This track is a perfect
fit to the rest of the album and caps off a solid 10 tracks. Each track on the
album expresses the depth that this band has. OLP takes a style that has all but
been worn out in the past and revives it.
