This set of songs is true Jazz/Funk in every sense. Robert Walter is an up-and-coming
keyboard/piano player who is very quietly making a name for himself in this
genre. A founding contributor of the now
defunct, but legendary Greyboy Allstars, Walter finds himself here
taking a time-out from his normal 20th Congress gig to team
up with some impressive, more established artists. And the results play out so chilled, smooth
and funky fresh.Accompanying Walter here on this foray is drummer Harvey
Mason, best known for his work with Herbie Hancock. Saxophonist Red Holloway from the old Jack
McDuff Group. Chuck Rainey on bass, who
has worked extensively with Aretha Franklin.
Lead guitarist Phil Upchurch who in his earlier days worked with Curtis
Mayfield. And finally Chuck Prada, also
making the sidetrack jump from 20th Congress to blend his
percussion and congas into this outfit.
The opener, ‘2% Body Fat’, really throws you right
into the groove and that groove lasts for the duration of the album. This groove effortlessly finds the time to
encompass such classy soul into every track as well. Anyone looking to unwind and let their minds
wander through some real fine grooves will be overjoyed with this set. It is basically a smooth easy-listening
jazz/funk/soul attempt with some hints of blues thrown in. I will be pretty blunt in calling this
endeavor better than anything he has released with his 20th
Congress band. It just plays so well
from top to bottom with high quality offerings.
Four funky Planets are grooving together.
