Take notice
America. The
British are coming.
The British are coming.
Well,
actually, The Doves are coming.
Doves are a trio of musicians hailing from
Manchester, England.
Their latest release, titled “The
Last Broadcast” is a
strong set of guitar rock. The songs fit together well to make for a very fluid
album, and one can feel the band plays with their souls on their sleeves.
The trio consists of Jimi
Goodwin (bass/vocals) along with twin brothers
Jez (guitar/vocals) and
Andy (drums) Williams.
After a critically hailed debut
album titled “Lost Souls” two years ago, the boys make sure to keep the pressure
on, not fading away with that dreaded sophomore slump album.
This could be the
underground treasure album of the year.
Right from the get-go, the first
song “Words” reaches out and hauls the listener into its web of sound.
The
catchy guitar rock doesn’t let up there, and it moves into an absolute gem of a
tune “There Goes
The Fear” clocking in at just under seven minutes.
These two
songs immediately grab you and leave you wondering what else the band has in
store for the rest of the album.
“M62 song”, an adaptation of
“Moonchild” originally by King
Crimson, changes the mood quickly being a
powerfully haunting acoustic track. This leads us into “Where
We’re Calling
From” which
plays as an atmospheric interlude lulling us into a dreamland before
the track “N.Y.” kicks in at a feverishly pace. “N.Y.” is one song that
absolutely would not feel out of place on a Pink
Floyd album. It is complimented
by a string section, which opens further to great sounding effects.
It’s got
that classic Floyd touch. No kidding.
The album continues on with a nice
mellow flow to it. Songs such as “Friday’s
Dust” and “The
Sulpher Man” include
orchestral arrangements accompanying the band. “Pounding” is an energetic
offering that grabs you and demands to be heard, while the album closes on an
absolute passionate note with “Caught
By The
River”, mixing acoustic and
electric sounds, making for such a strong closing song and bringing the album
full circle. The highlights of the disc would have to be “Words”, “There
Goes
The Fear”, and “Caught
By The
River.”
Comparisons to bands such as
Ride, Radiohead,
Stone Roses,
Candy Skins,
U2 and Pink
Floyd are not too far off the
mark. The vocals have that muffled sound to them giving off a dreamy, lush mood
with the music. This is a great sounding, abstract and very mature effort put
forth. No money-making greed schemes here.
Just a trio of guys playing well
crafted music with a soul and a passion.
“The
Last Broadcast” could well
be the most interesting, experimental listen we have had in a little while.
At
the very least, mark it as a very ambitious outing that is welcome in this day
and age of music. Hurry now because included in the first few presses of its
U.S. release is a second limited edition bonus disc of four unreleased tracks.
All in all, it deserves a skillful ranking of 4
Planets.
