The Velvet Underground lives! Borrowing heavily from the New
York / CBGB's / Andy Warhol sound of the Velvet Underground,
The Ramones, and Iggy Popp, The Stokes put enough of their own
energy, attitude, and hipper-than-thou lyrics into their debut
cd to re-invent the genre for a new audience. Recorded in a
Manhattan basement studio on a shoestring budget, The Strokes
have created a modern rock-n-roll 'Tour De Force'.
The Stokes have
so far survived the intense media hype surrounding their big
label debut, even going so far as to name their album “Is This
It” as a sly jab at the ready-to-be cynical press. The last
song on the cd continues this “screw you” attitude with a song
entitled “Take It Or Leave It”.
Despite the now
ravenous media praise surrounding the band (the cd won Time
Magazine’s coveted “CD of the Year” for 2001”), the music
ultimately wins. It is difficult, if not impossible, to listen
to this disc and not get sucked in by the garage band
production, punk guitar riffs and reverb, pop hooks and
melody, and sing along choruses. Clocking in at a brisk 35
minutes in length, all songs are short, loud and catchy,
demanding to be replayed again and again.
